Lent20

Lenten Poem

by:  Ann Weems

Lent is a time to take time to let the power

of our faith story take hold of us,

a time to let the events  get up

and walk around in us,

a time to intensify our living unto Christ,

a time to hover over the thoughts of our hearts,

a time to place our feet in the streets of

Jerusalem or to walk along the sea and

listen to his Word,

a time to touch his robe

and feel the healing surge through us,

a time to ponder and a time to wonder...

Lent is a time to allow

a fresh new taste of God!

Perhaps we're afraid to have time to think,

for thoughts come unbidden.

Perhaps we're afraid to face our future knowing our past.

Give us courage, O God,

to hear your Word

and to read our living into it.

Give us the trust to know we're forgiven

and give us the faith

to take up our lives and walk.

Lent2

Dear Friends,

Within the Presbyterian denomination we baptize children at infancy. The theology behind this practice of infant baptism... signifies our belief and awareness of God’s presence in our lives from the very beginning...and how He is very much at work in our lives...well before we even have the capability of comprehending it.
And our practice of infant baptism represents our belief and awareness of how ...there is nothing we can do to earn God’s love and grace.
In much the same way that a child is not able to earn their parents love and grace..... but yet it is freely bestowed upon them...so God’s love and grace is a gift... that is freely bestowed upon us.
And since the Presbyterian way of doing things..... entails baptizing children at infancy...then that means that...those who have grown up in the Presbyterian church...aren’t able to remember their baptism.
I know that many of you are cradle Presbyterians...you have been part of the Presbyterian church since day one...which means you don’t have the privilege of remembering what your baptism was like...or how you felt that day as you became a newly baptized child of God.

*******************

I did not grow up in the Presbyterian Church....and I was not baptized as an infant....so I  have the luxury and privilege of recalling my own baptism.  I can remember what it was like that day...and how I felt afterwards.
As a young girl I attended a Baptist church not too far from my home...and at age 10...I was baptized in that church.  On the day of my baptism I remember wearing all white....as I had been instructed to do so by my pastor.
And when we reached the point in our service when I was to be baptized...I remember walking up on to the front of the sanctuary and climbing into a huge tub of water that was on the chancel.
At that point my pastor said a few words...had a prayer...and then I was fully submerged into the tub of water three times...as he said...in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Afterwards, everyone was smiling and clapping..... and I was led off the chancel...... to a back room where I changed into some dry clothes and blow dried my hair.
As I was in that back room changing and getting ready...I remember  looking myself over...inspecting myself...as if there was supposed to be some sort of change in my physical appearance.
And since I didn’t see any physical changes...I got dressed...marched right out of that back room and straight over to mom...and I said... “Mom I don’t think we did it right...I don’t look any different!”

*****************

My mom snickered...and then she reassured me that my baptism had gone exactly like it was supposed to.
She told me that it wasn’t supposed to cause any changes in my outer appearance ...but rather it was more about the changes that were occurring inside of me....and how I was creating a relationship with God.
But for months after my baptism...despite what my mother had said...I was absolutely convinced that my Pastor hadn’t baptized me correctly.
It wasn’t until several years later that I really understood what my mother meant...and what my baptism signified...and as the years pressed on...I did start to experience changes in my life because of my baptism.
There weren’t changes to my physical appearance like I had anticipated as a 10 year old girl...but there were some pretty pivotal changes that occurred with my inner identity...and how I perceived myself.

    ********************

In The years following my baptism...I came to understand myself in a new and different way....where I was no longer just Dana Vaughn.....the daughter of David and Betti-Gene Vaughn...but rather I was Dana Vaughn...the daughter of God.
And as that child of God...I knew that God loved me.....that God was always watching over me and providing for me.  I knew that God had a plan and purpose for my life...all of which made me a stronger and more confident young woman.
And that is what our baptism is supposed to do...it is supposed to change and effect our inner identity...how we perceive ourselves...and who we understand ourselves to be.
It should give us the strength we need to persevere during times of difficulty.  And it should give us the confidence we need to chase after our dreams and accomplish great things in life.

******************

Fred Craddock...who was a very well known preacher and the author of over a dozen books and commentaries....wrote a book in 2001 called the Craddock Stories.
In this book he tells the story...about an evening when he and his wife were out to dinner at a little restaurant in the Smokey Mountains.   As he and his wife were enjoying their dinner....an elderly man came over to their table and introduced himself.
The elderly man said... "Good evening folks...I know you guys are just passing through......but I’m from around these parts," and then he proceeded to tell the story of how he didn’t have a father.
The elderly man said.  "My mother was never married, and she received a lot of shame for having a child out of wedlock.
He went on to say...the shame the community directed toward her...was also directed towards me.  Whenever I went to town with my mother, I could see people staring at us...making guesses about who my daddy was.
    At school...I ate lunch alone.
In my early teens...I began attending a little church...but I always left before church was over, because I was afraid somebody would ask me what a boy like me was doing in church.
One day...before I could escape church early...I felt a hand on my shoulder.  It was the minister.
The minister looked closely at my face and I just knew..... that he too..... was trying to guess who my father was.
But instead the minister said... "Well, boy, you are a child of..." and then he paused.
When he spoke again he said, "Boy, you are a child of God.  and I see a striking resemblance."
Then the minister swatted me on the bottom and said, 'Now, you go on and claim your inheritance.'

The elderly man went on to tell Craddock and his wife...how he left church that day a different person.
He said.  "When I left church that day...that was the beginning of my life."
At that point in the conversation...Fred Craddock was inspired by this man’s story....and he said, “Sir, can you please tell me what your name is?”
The elderly man answer... "Ben Hooper.  My name is Ben Hooper." And he walked away from the table.

After he had walked away...Dr. Craddock leaned in towards his wife and said...”When I was a kid...I remember my father talking about how the people of Tennessee had twice elected a fellow who had been born out of wedlock...as the governor of their state.  His name was Ben Hooper.”

******************

Our baptism is intended to change our lives....to alter our inner identity...... how we perceive ourselves......and  who we understand ourselves to be.
Our baptism gives us the strength and confidence we need to persevere in life and accomplish great things.
And on days like these...when we hear the familiar story of how John the baptist.....baptized Jesus...as we celebrate Jesus’ baptism...then it affords all of us the opportunity to celebrate our own baptism...whether we can literally remember it or not.
And as we celebrate our baptism...it awakens a renewed sense of strength and confidence within us...and allows each one of us to...reclaim our inheritance as a child of God...once more.

*********************

At the end of our scripture reading this morning....after Jesus was baptized....we heard how the heavens opened up and the holy spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove......that is when God said.....this is my son with whom I am well pleased.
As baptized children of God.....this is our story too!
When each one of us passed through the waters of our own baptism....God looked down from the heavens.........with a big smile on his face and said...... this is my child with whom I am well pleased.
And as we have grown and evolved over the years...as our faith has deepened...as we have drawn closer to God...and our behaviors have become more exemplary of Christ’s behaviors...God has taken great pleasure in seeing those transformations and watching us grow.

******************

This past week Polly came into my office and handed me some pieces of paper that she found in the pews...it was a stack of the slips of paper that I had set out for you guys last week so that you could write down your New Years Resolution to God.
And sure enough you guys had written down some resolutions to God on them...which tells me two things.  1.  You guys actually listen to my sermons ...and 2. You guys have some goals for this year!
These goals...these new years resolutions to God that we made last week...they are all things that will draw us closer to God...things that will deepen our faith...things that will move us closer to being the person God intends for us to be....
And as we spend these next 12 months transforming.....and fulfilling those new years resolutions...The Lord takes great pleasure in seeing those things...and delights in watching us continue to grow.

***************

We who are baptized struggle just like everybody else to be decent human beings.
We are no more and no less tempted than anybody else to be the person that God created us to be...but through our baptism God gave us the spiritual power to choose a higher and better way.
From our baptism onward, we live inside the promise that we will have a strength that comes from another world...enabling us to will and to work...for God's good pleasure.
As we remember our baptism...the challenge is to actually remember that we too...just like Christ...are God’s children...and to remember that God is standing on a star way up in the heavens above us...saying, This is my child...with whom I am well pleased.
May we all take time to remember the significance of our baptism and be ever mindful of just how much the Lord delights in seeing each one of his children grow.

Your Friend,

Dana

Mission/Outreach News....

Pennies for Hunger

Pennies for HungerOur church will again receive the "Pennies for Hunger" offering the last Sunday of every month in 2016.  During the month, have a jar or basket on your kitchen or dining room table.  Each member of the family may put in two cents for each meal. Then bring all the pennies the last Sunday of the month.  If everyone does this, you will be amazed at how much we can raise to help feed the hungry.  This would amount to about $1.80 per person each month.  Multiply that by 50 and we could raise at least $90 each month or over $1,000 per year.

"Souper" Bowl Luncheon

Souper Bowl LuncheonThe Mission Committee invites you to its annual “Souper Bowl” get-together after church on Sunday, February 7.  Come and join your friends for a bowl of homemade soup, salad,

bread and a dessert.  Coffee, tea and juice will be provided.  A suggested donation of $10.00 is requested along with a can of soup(s) which will be given to the Westfield Food Pantry.

One Great Hour of Sharing

"Serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received."

1 Peter 4:10

One Great Hour of Sharing

This year as we move into Lent and prepare for One Great Hour of Sharing, we remain grateful for the transformation made possible through this special offering. In places like Kitui, Kenya, Asheville, North Carolina and Iona, Michigan, those most in need are finding hope and help through the work of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, the Self-Development of People program and their partners in ministry.  In this media-driven environment of “the next big story,” it is easy to become distracted from the reality faced by our brothers and sisters around the world where poverty, disaster and war cause displacement and suffering.

This is why we continue to give to One Great Hour of Sharing. When we give this year, we give in faith—knowing that staff in the three One Great Hour of Sharing programs will be responding in Christ’s name to the cries of our sisters and brothers throughout the next year. We trust that they will respond as they did in West Africa in the wake of the devastating Ebola crisis: immediately, directly, and through our partners wherever the emergency occurs. But equally important, we know that they will remain in areas of devastation long after the news cameras have moved elsewhere as they continue rebuilding both lives and communities.

Feeding the hungry, helping people build up their own livelihoods, responding to disasters—these are all ways that your gifts to One Great Hour of Sharing are changing lives, changing communities and changing the world.

We hope you will join us on Palm Sunday, March 20, and Easter, March 27, and that you will join Christians all across the country in opening their hearts to witness tangibly to the abundant love of God through One great Hour of Sharing.  Envelopes will be available in the pew racks or you can mail your gift to the church office earmarked  "2015 OG H S".  Please give generously!

Easter Lilies

LiliesThe Worship & Music Committee of the Session of the church is now accepting donations given as Easter memorials of your loved ones.  The contributions make possible the palms on Palm Sunday and the beautiful display of Easter lilies which so enhance our worship service on Easter.  As we rejoice at the news of our Risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, it is a most fitting tribute that we remember thos we love who have gone to share in his great Kingdom.  The price per lily this year is $11.00.  If you would like to give an Easter Lily as an Easter Memorial or Honorarium please call the church office/326-2643. After the Easter service the lilies are distributed by the Deacons to the ill and shut-ins.  Should you elect to take your donation to one of our members or otherwise, it is important to let us know your intention so enough  lilies can be ordered.

Tenebrae service

Good Friday, Tenebrae Service

March 25, 2016

7:00 p.m.

"Tenebrae" is the Latin word for "shadows" or "darkness." The Tenebrae service has been celebrated by the Christian Church for many hundreds of years.  The service consists of readings, congregational responses to readings and song responses ~ all of them centering on the events of Good Friday.  As the service progresses, the candles will be blown out one at a time until eventually the church is dark.

Way of the Cross

The Way of the Cross Good Friday Gathering

The Westfield Ministerial Association again will sponsor a gathering at Noon on Good Friday, March 25.  The annual gathering has been a common way of participating in the passion and suffering of Jesus Christ as a Good Friday service of remembrance.  A walking journey with various stops reminds participants of different moments of Christ's passion journey and encourages reflection and contemplation.

The gathering will begin at 12:00 Noon on Good Friday, March 25.  People are asked  to gather at the Moore Park Gazebo for opening devotions and the First Station and then to St. Peter's Episcopal Church for the Third Station.  There will be two options at St. Peter's.   Those who have difficulty walking may choose  to remain at St. Peter's for the remainder of the Stations.  Those who are able may choose to continue the walk.

People are free to join the gathering and leave at any point.  In the case of inclement weather, the entire gather will be held at St. Peters' Episcopal Church.  The churches of Westfield invite and welcome all interested people to journey the Way of the Cross with them.
